The Vow of Poverty: A Spiritual Insight on Freedom, Light, and Choice

By Violette Blue 19.05.2025

When we hear about the vow of poverty, history often points to Francis of Assisi, the Italian saint who lived from 1181 to 1226. Francis embraced poverty, chastity, and obedience not as chains but as a way to strip away distractions and live closer to God. His example has inspired generations, yet the vow carries complex spiritual meanings that ripple far beyond his time.

Italy, during Francis’s era and later into the Renaissance, was a place where fear of witchcraft ran deep. Between 1400 and 1500, witch hunts swept the land, ending overt practices but leaving shadows of dark beliefs and energies that some say still linger today. These forces seek to dim the light within us, to spread fear, anger, and obedience—not the free, compassionate will God gave humanity.

The Biblical View on Vows and Freedom

In the Bible, Jesus offers clear guidance about vows and promises. He tells us, “Do not swear at all... Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything beyond this comes from the evil one” (Matthew 5:37). This teaching invites us to live in truth and freedom, without binding ourselves to rigid vows that can become spiritual traps.

Buddhism, too, emphasizes ethical living through precepts—refraining from harm, lying, or adultery—without formal vows. The focus is on compassion and mindful choice, not on external restrictions.

Vows, Witchcraft, and the Power of Free Will

Some view the vow of poverty as a form of spiritual curse tied to witchcraft origins, linked to fallen angels who rebelled against God’s goodness. From this perspective, vows represent a limitation on the free will God grants us. When we experience sudden fear, low self-esteem, or feel pressured to obey blindly, it may be a sign of dark influences at work. God’s children, however, are called to follow with compassion, not command.

God’s promises are about love, light, and abundance—not suffering or lack. The law of free will means we are free to choose how we live, guided by divine love. When you encounter the phrase “vow of poverty,” it can serve as a reminder to resist any spiritual bondage that tries to dim your light, delay your path, or cloud your mind.

Embracing Light and Abundance

The vow of poverty is more than a historical practice—it’s a spiritual crossroads. It challenges us to question what true freedom means and to embrace a life illuminated by love and abundance. In walking this path, we find that real power lies not in vows or curses but in living openly, honestly, and with the bright light of God’s promises shining within us.

Remember: True spiritual freedom comes from living with an open heart, guided by compassion and the abundant love God offers. Reject spiritual bondage, trust in the light within, and choose a path of abundance—not limitation.

Meditation to Connect with Divine Love and Light

To deepen your connection with divine love and light, try this simple meditation:

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes and take several deep, calming breaths.

Visualize a pure white light channel shining down from heaven through the sky and clouds, gently enveloping your body from head to toe. Feel this light as a warm, loving energy that cleanses and protects you.

Call upon your guardian angels or spiritual guides to be present with you, offering their support and love.

As you remain in this white light, imagine any negative energy, fear, or heaviness falling away from your body, dropping down into the earth below, where it can be transformed and released.

Stay within the white light channel until you feel lighter, uplifted, and filled with peace.

When you’re ready, gently open your eyes, carrying this renewed sense of divine love and light with you into your day.
